Horse price movements on their own are of course just guidelines to where the money is going or not going, and as such must be considered very carefully with full regard to other key factors, race value, number of runners, price value and probably most importantly the type of race.
Steamers – Steamers refer to horses whose odds contract from their opening show. Bookmakers are contracting their prices to try and control their liabilities. You also have to factor in the increasing army of private traders dipping in and out of the markets trying to scalp small and regular profits.
Drifters – Drifters are horses whose odds get bigger from their opening position. Bookmakers often push out the odds of a horse to try and make them a more enticing proposition to back, in order to balance their books. Again, in addition to the activities of the bookmakers, you have to factor in the private traders dipping in and out of the markets trying to scalp small and regular profits.
So, true movement analysis requires allowances for this noise in the market.
One very important movement observation, always look for significant surges in prices at all times of the day, including AM movement and movement near to just before the scheduled off time.
